🔦 DIY Explorer Kits

45 minutes Easy ~$3–4 per kit

Explorer kits serve as both seat decor and party favors, which is one of my favorite tricks for keeping costs efficient. Tiny binoculars and a magnifying glass at each kid's seat transform them from guests into junior dino explorers the moment they sit down. They'll wear those binoculars all party long.

What You'll Need

Per kit (multiply by your kid guest count). For Logan's party with 12 kids, you'd need 12 of everything.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1
Order everything a week in advance
Most of these items are available cheaply in bulk on Amazon. Order with a full week of lead time so you're not scrambling. The binoculars, magnifying glasses, and mini notebooks are usually sold together in "explorer kit" sets — check those first since they're often cheaper than buying individually.
2
Make the "Explorer ID" labels (optional but great)
Design a small label in Canva that says "Official Dino Explorer" with a blank line for the child's name. Print, cut, and attach one to each notebook. If you have time, write each child's name in advance using your RSVP list. This makes every kid feel like they were expected and thought about.
Tip: Leave a few blank labels in a basket at the entrance for last-minute guests.
3
Assemble the kits the night before
Put the binoculars, magnifying glass, notebook, and pencil into each bag or pouch. Tie with a piece of twine. This takes about 3 minutes per kit once you have everything in front of you. Set up an assembly line with the bags first, then work through each item.
4
Place at each kid's seat
Set one kit at each child's place setting. Leave the binoculars out of the bag on top so they're immediately visible — kids will pick them up right away and the party has energy before it even officially starts.
Tip: Add one small dino figurine (leftover from the centerpieces) tucked into the bag. It's a $1 extra per kit and kids remember it.
